Security Driver Bits & Keys
Security bits and L-keys provide the matching geometry needed to install and service compatible tamper-resistant fasteners. Both the drive system and drive size must match — pin-in drives require tools designed to clear the center pin, and spanner drives require correctly spaced engagement pins. Insert bits and L-keys serve different installation and access needs, so identify the fastener before selecting the tool.
Why security bits and keys must match the drive
Security drives use distinct recesses, pins, holes, or engagement features, and a tool made for one drive system should not be assumed to fit another. The correct security tool has to match both the drive pattern and the size — pin-in 6-lobe and pin-in hex tools need a center opening that clears the security pin, while two-hole spanner tools need pins that align with the holes in the fastener head.
Full engagement helps reduce slipping, recess damage, and tool damage during use. If the fastener can't be identified confidently, a photograph, sample, drawing, or existing part number should be reviewed before ordering.
- 1/4" Hex Insert Bits
- Short-Arm L-Keys
Tool size and geometry must match the fastener drive, and not every drive system is offered in every tool format. Exact compatibility, dimensions, format, availability, minimum quantities, and set requirements should be confirmed with Screw & Supply.
How to select the correct security bit or key
Start with the drive pattern, not merely the screw diameter — drive size isn't always determined solely by thread size. Pin-in tools must clear the center pin, and spanner-tool pins must align with the fastener holes. Insert bits are generally selected for compatible bit holders and drivers, while L-keys may be useful where a self-contained hand tool or compact access is preferred. Confirm tool-holder compatibility and access before ordering — powered installation settings must be determined for your application and aren't provided by this page.

Match the tool to the security drive
Pin-In 6-Lobe →
The matching security bit uses a center opening to clear the pin while engaging the six-lobe recess.
Pin-In Hex →
The matching bit or key uses a center opening to clear the pin while engaging the hex socket.
Two-Hole Spanner →
The matching bit uses two pins or prongs aligned with the holes in the fastener head.
Tri-Groove screws and nuts use external Tri-Groove sockets →, not conventional insert bits or L-keys. One-way screws → have separate installation and removal considerations. See the complete Drive Guide → for a full comparison.
Insert bits or L-keys: which format fits the job?
1/4" hex insert bits
Intended for use in compatible 1/4" bit holders, hand drivers, or powered drivers. Useful where repeat installation, production work, or interchangeable tooling is needed. Holder compatibility, reach, access, and installation settings must be confirmed for your application.
Short-arm L-keys
Self-contained hand tools that don't require a separate bit holder — useful for manual installation or service where compact access is helpful. The drive system and size must still match the fastener.
Complete drivers and kits → may be useful when multiple tools or drive systems need to be organized for field or maintenance work.
Where matching security tooling is needed
Matching bits and keys support assembly, authorized maintenance, repair, and field service wherever compatible security fasteners are installed.
- Field Service & MRO →
Supports field-service kits and MRO tool cribs for technicians and maintenance crews.
- Machinery Guarding & Panels →
Services guards and access panels secured with pin-in drives.
- Electronics & Electrical Enclosures →
Supports authorized service on electrical enclosures.
- Detention & Institutional →
Services institutional hardware requiring controlled access.
- Transit, Rail & Signage →
Supports installation and service of transit fixtures.
- Utility & Infrastructure →
Services utility equipment secured with matching security drives.
Identify a tool or request a custom set
We can help identify a compatible bit or key, or review requirements for a multi-size tool set. Provide the security drive type, drive size, fastener type, existing fastener part number, existing tool information, clear photographs, physical sample information, insert-bit or L-key preference, tool-holder information, required reach or access limitations, quantity, and application details. We'll review what you send and follow up on feasibility.
Common questions
- Which security-drive systems use matching bits or keys?
- Pin-in 6-lobe and pin-in hex drives, and two-hole spanner drives, are generally serviced with matching insert bits or L-keys. Tri-Groove hardware instead uses matching external security sockets.
- How do I determine the correct security-tool size?
- Start with the drive pattern on the fastener, not just its diameter — screw diameter alone may not identify the drive size. A photograph, sample, drawing, or existing part number can help confirm the correct tool.
- Why will an ordinary bit not fit a pin-in security screw?
- Pin-in drives require a center opening in the tool to clear the security pin. An ordinary solid-tip bit cannot seat around the pin, so it does not provide the intended engagement.
- What is the difference between an insert bit and an L-key?
- A 1/4-inch hex insert bit is used in a compatible bit holder, hand driver, or powered driver. A short-arm L-key is a self-contained hand tool that doesn't require a separate holder.
- What materials and finishes are offered for security bits and keys?
- Our bits and keys are made from S2 or hardened tool steel with a black oxide finish. Exact sizes and availability should be confirmed when requesting a quote.
- Can Screw & Supply help identify a replacement tool or assemble a tool set?
- Yes. Photographs, samples, part numbers, or dimensions can help us identify the correct tool or assemble a multi-size set. Send your details through a quote request and we will follow up.
