What is Prop 65?
California's Proposition 65 — officially the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 — requires businesses to provide clear and reasonable warnings when their products expose Californians to chemicals the state has identified as causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Its purpose is to help Californians make informed decisions about their exposure to potentially harmful substances. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) maintains and regularly updates the list of these chemicals.
What does a Prop 65 label mean?
A Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean a product violates any safety standard. It signifies that the product contains, or may expose users to, one or more listed chemicals above established threshold levels. Some warnings name a specific chemical; others give a general statement of potential exposure. The presence of a warning reflects regulatory compliance — not a definitive health risk or product defect.
